Spring and Summer Roof Maintenance Tips

With the important role that your building’s roof plays, it is important to ensure that it is in good condition at all times. This means carrying out maintenance work on a regular basis so as to protect it from the elements. Here are a few spring and summer roof maintenance tips.

Look for flashing damage

A metal stripped that is usually installed around the chimney or structures such as skylight, satellite dish and venting system. This metal strip is known as flashing. Since flashing will wear out or become loose over time, you should have it inspected regularly to detect and fix any problems that may result in leaks.

Check the eaves for debris

During a windy storm, there is a chance that debris will be deposited under the eaves. As this goes on uninterrupted, the debris may attract insects and other pests. One of the important ways to protect your roof in spring and summer involves checking the eaves and removing the debris.

Check for water and ice dam damage

After the cold winter months, melting snow and ice dams can cause great damage to your roof. This is why you should consider checking for signs of a leak or damage. Failure to do this may lead to your roof rotting or the insulation being destroyed by seeping water.

Clean and tighten the gutters/ downspouts

In case your area experiences heavy rains during spring and summer, you should ensure that both your gutters and downspouts are cleaned and tightened. This will keep water flowing from the roof, effectively preventing it from collecting there.
